Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Limited (CMPDI), established in January 1974 as a division of Coal Mines Authority Limited and reconstituted as a public sector undertaking under Coal India Limited in November 1975 with headquarters in Ranchi, Jharkhand, originated from the planning wing of the former National Coal Development Corporation to centralize scientific mining consultancy post-coal nationalization, evolving steadily into India's premier integrated mining service provider while expanding from coal-focused services to comprehensive mineral exploration and environmental management. The core business encompasses end-to-end mining consultancy including geological exploration, resource evaluation, mine planning and design for open-pit and underground operations, infrastructure engineering, environmental clearances, and geospatial solutions across coal, lignite, and other minerals. Key expertise lies in advanced hydro-geological studies, geophysical investigations, project feasibility reports, and ISO 9001-certified execution supporting national resource inventories. Unique strengths include Mini Ratna status, a single-window multidisciplinary approach consolidating planning under one roof, and nodal agency role for Government of India in mineral matters. As a wholly-owned Coal India subsidiary, CMPDI primarily serves Coal India subsidiaries, the Ministry of Coal, NITI Aayog, and state mining departments alongside international clients, guided by an operational philosophy of scientific planning, sustainable development, and collaborative R&D to address resource scarcity, environmental compliance, and technological demands in India's mining sector.
